Five-star international hotel envisaged for Launceston

by Rose White

Plans for a new five-star hotel in the heart of Launceston have won praise from Tasmania’s Premier.

Local property developer Creative Property Holdings (CPH) this week unveiled their vision to deliver a luxury property at 41-55 Paterson Street in Launceston’s CBD – currently the site of a carpark.

The hotel will comprise 190 rooms and is backed by an “iconic international hotel partner,” CPH said. The name of the operator will be released at a later date.

“The hotel will support increased tourism to Launceston and surrounding areas, giving visitors choice of a design hotel in a central location,” CPH said. “The hotel will be thoughtfully curated to offer guests an immersive experience, where they can retreat, recharge, and find inspiration in both the hotel’s unique architecture and the captivating natural and built environments of Launceston and the broader northern region.”

Jeremy Rockliff, Tasmania’s Minister for Tourism & Hospitality said the project “is another strong sign of confidence in our tourism and hospitality industry.”

“This project will create local jobs, inject $212 million into our economy and further cement Tasmania’s reputation as a year-round tourist destination.”

Chris Billing, Managing Director of Creative Property Holdings said “We believe a hotel of this size and international stature will be a game-changer for the Launceston CBD, supporting tourism demand and increasing visitor spend in the city and surrounding areas.”

“Over the past seven years, Launceston has significantly trailed behind Hobart in terms of new high-quality hotel rooms, adding only one-fifth of the new rooms that Hobart has introduced,” he said.

“With major events set to grow, including more AFL and VFL content, it’s important Launceston has the accommodation and choice of designer amenity, to meet the demand.”

CPH will submit its formal development application with Council in the coming months. The firm anticipates construction will commence in the second half of 2025, subject to timely regulatory approvals.
