Aurora Expeditions’ third vessel, Douglas Mawson, has been launched at a ceremony in Haimen, China – the seventh and final vessel in SunStone Maritime Group’s Infinity Class series.
Built by China Merchants Heavy Industry, the vessel will undertake sea trials next year before being chartered to Australia-based Aurora Expeditions.
“Douglas Mawson continues to exemplify the cutting-edge innovation, performance, and sustainability that define this fleet.” SunStone said.
The newcomer joins Infinity Class sister ships Ocean Explorer and Ocean Albatros which were delivered to SunStone in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
With capacity for up to 170 passengers and 102 crew, Douglas Mawson features advanced safety systems, energy-efficient operations, and eco-friendly technologies designed to minimise environmental impact.

Built with Ulstein’s inverted bow design, the vessel is IceClass 1A and Polar Class 6 certified. Key features will include a dynamic positioning system and zero-speed stabilisers.
“The ship provides an exclusive yet spacious experience, offering amenities such as a swimming pool, bar, restaurants, lounges, a library, gym, and spa,” SunStone said.
“This blend of intimate luxury and robust capability ensures immersive adventures for passengers exploring remote destinations.”
Named after the legendary Australian geologist and explorer, Douglas Mawson will set sail in late 2025, visiting East Antarctica during its first season.
It represents Aurora Expeditions’ return to the region after a 13-year hiatus, with some departures scheduled to the White Continent from Hobart, Australia.
